Armenian army plagued by suicides, statistics reveal
Over a period of six years, from 2010 to 2015, the Armenian armed forces suffered a total of 206 fatal casualties, of which 48 were due to suicides and 43 the result of murders, according to a report by Transconflict.com.

The report was based on the statistics from the Armenian database Safesoldiers.am.

The statistics don’t include the fatalities that were the result of ceasefire violations on the line of contact of the Azerbaijani and Armenian troops, the report said.

“In percentage, the numbers are equivalent to 23 percent and 21 percent of total non-combat casualties during the last six years,” according to the report.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
