Richter scale: 8.3 magnitude

Areas affected: From Chilean coast, to Rio de Janeiro and even New Zealand

Human toll: At least 8 fatalities, 1 million evacuees overnight

2. 2014: Ludian county, China

Richter scale: 6.2 magnitude

Areas affected: Cities of Wenping, Zhaotang in Yunnan province

Human toll: 729 fatalities, 229,700 people displaced, 60,000 homes damaged or destroyed

Richter scale: 7.7 magnitude

Areas affected: Karachi, Delhi and Dubai

Human toll: 825 fatalities, 100,000 displaced, 2,,100 homes destroyed

4. 2012: Visayas, Philippines

Richter scale: 6.7 magnitude

Areas affected: Across the Philippine islands

Human toll: 113 fatalities, 22,657 people displaced, and 2,650 homes damaged or destroyed

5. 2011: Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, Japan

Richter scale: 9 magnitude

Areas affected: From Japan, to Antarctica and the Pacific. 30ft waves damaged Japan`s nuclear reactors

Human toll: 20,896 fatalities from the earthquake and resulting tsunamis, 185,000 people displaced, as of one month after the earthquake
