13 people dead, over 100 injured after deadly van attack in Barcelona – Catalan President
The deadly van attack in Barcelona, which occurred earlier in the day, has claimed lives of 13 people, while 100 people were hospitalized, President of the Catalan Government Carles Puigdemont said Thursday.
The president also praised the work of law enforcement agencies. “Our democracy will fight with terrorism no matter where it happens,” Puigdemont said in an address, broadcast by the 24 Horas.

The Catalan president reportedly confirmed that two people had already been detained in connection with the incident.

A van rammed into a crowd in Barcelona's Ramblas tourist area. The local police confirmed that it was a terrorist attack.

The police reccomended people to avoid the area. The suspect fled the scene. Shortly after the incident, two armed men broke into a restaurant nearby.

At the same time, local media reported, that armed perpetrators of the attack barricaded themselves in a Turkish restaurant near Boqueria market taking hostages.

El Periodico newspaper reported that the suspected perpetrator was a man of 5’7’’ wearing a white shirt with blue stripes.

The CIA has reportedly warned the Catalan police of possible terrorist attack prior to the van ramming in Barcelona's city center on Thursday.
