EU once again expresses support for Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity

A resolution, entitled "Annual report on the implementation of the Common Foreign and Security Policy", was adopted with an overwhelming majority of votes during a plenary session of the European Parliament on January 15.

Paragraph 36 of the resolution reaffirms EU’s commitment to support the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of the Eastern Partnership member states, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry told AzVision.az.

It should be emphasized that the issue of territorial integrity is mentioned in the resolution along with the expression "internationally recognized borders."

The document also underlines the need for a unified approach to resolve all conflicts in the territory of the Eastern Partnership countries in accordance with the norms and principles of international law, as well as for increased support to conflict-affected residents, internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees.

The resolution rrefers to the 2016 Global Strategy for the European Union’s Foreign and Security Policy and the Joint Declaration of the 2017 Summit of the Eastern Partnership countries in Brussels.

It should be recalled that the 2016 Global Strategy for the European Union’s Foreign and Security Policy assessed the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of states and the inviolability of borders as key elements of the European security order. The Join Declaration of the 2017 Summit of the Eastern Partnership countries in Brussels also expressed support for the territorial integrity, independence and sovereignty of the Eastern Partnership countries.

The resolutions adopted by the European Parliament annually are binding documents that may influence the activity of the European Commission during the year.
