Azerbaijan slams Armenia’s provocative propaganda on events of January 1990

Armenia’s provocative propaganda on the events of January 1990 is aimed at covering up its acts of genocide against the civilian population of Azerbaijan, its policy of ethnic cleansing, as well as the brutal murder of 613 civilians in the town of Khojaly overnight, Leyla Abdullayeva, spokesperson for Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry told AzVision.az.

She noted that the 30th anniversary of the events of January 20, 1990, when the heroic sons and daughters of Azerbaijan sacrificed their lives for the independence, was commemorated by the country’s diplomatic missions in more than 60 countries. The spokesperson particularly hailed the support for Azerbaijan provided by the international community, including foreign diplomatic corps.

Abdullayeva described the massacre committed by Soviet troops against the civilian population on the night of January 19 to 20, 1990 as a crime against humanity, stressing that the then-leadership is responsible for these acts.

“The January events could not break the desire of the Azerbaijani people for independence, and our country regained its impendence. Today, the entire international community unambiguously recognize and support our independence,” she added.

As for Armenia’s provocative propaganda regarding the events of January 1990, the spokesperson noted that the Armenian side pursues the goal of covering up its acts of genocide against the civilian population of Azerbaijan, its policy of ethnic cleansing, as well as the brutal murder of 613 civilians overnight in the town of Khojaly.

“Instead of unfounded accusations against Azerbaijan, the Armenian Foreign Ministry should pay attention to its history, recognize the policy of ethnic cleansing approved by the country’s former presidents, as well as the continued occupation policy strongly condemned by the international community,” she concluded.
