Azerbaijanis abroad issue statement on Armenian military provocations

Azerbaijanis living abroad have issued a statement on the large-scale military provocations committed by Armenia on Sunday.

The statement reads:

“The Armenian armed forces committed a large-scale provocation, subjecting the positions of the Azerbaijani army to intensive shelling from large-caliber weapons, mortars, and artillery installations of various calibers in the front-line zone on Sept. 27 at 06:00 (GMT+4). This is another deliberate and targeted provocation by the Armenian armed forces to shell civilians and facilities on the frontline. As a result of the provocation of the occupying Armenian forces, there are casualties among the civilian population and servicemen, and many houses and civilian objects were severely damaged.

The deliberate targeting of civilians is a gross violation of international humanitarian law, including the 1949 Geneva Conventions. In general, the Khojaly genocide committed in February 1992, as well as the Tovuz provocation in July 2020, when the whole world was fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, is clear examples of the Armenian armed forces targeting the civilian population.

At a time when the general debates of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly, Armenia keeps taking steps contradicting international law, the UN Charter and disrespecting the international community.

The provocation of the Armenian armed forces on the state border in the direction of Azerbaijan’s Tovuz district once again showed the whole world that Armenians are occupiers. The US Congress also labeled Armenia as an aggressor country. After all this, Armenia, in violation of the requirements of the Geneva Convention and international law, continues resettling terrorists from various countries, including Lebanon and Syria, in the occupied Azerbaijani territories.

We call on the world community and international organizations to influence the Armenian state to immediately liberate the occupied Azerbaijani lands in order to ensure peace and stability in the region.
