Karabakh has never been part of an Armenian state, the Irish historian Patrick Walsh posted in his Facebook account.
In his post, Patrick Walsh stated Karabakh was an independent Muslim khanate in the century before the Russians conquered it in the 1820s which later became a part of a majority Muslim province of the Tsarist state up until its collapse in 1917-1918.
Patrick Walsh also listed the timeline of Karabakh in his post highlighting that Karabakh:
- was part of the independent Azerbaijan Republic from May 1918;
-was part of Azerbaijan under the British occupation from December 1918 to August 1919;
-was a part of the independent Azerbaijan Democratic Republic from August 1919 until May 1920;
-was part of the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic from 1920 until the 1990s.
After giving details about the chronological details of Karabakh, Walsh stressed that it is still part of Azerbaijan under international law and in accordance with the UN.
“Now the Azerbaijani army is making it the de facto part of Azerbaijan again. It has never been part of an Armenian state. I know you are not a historian Mr Pashinyan but what part of this do you not understand?”, he added.
