 Journalists fulfilling duties in conflict areas must be protected – Azerbaijan’s top official

Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan, Head of Foreign Policy Affairs Department at the Presidential Administration Hikmet Hajiyev post another tweet on the death of the country’s media representatives as a result of a mine blast in Kalbajar on June 4, AzVision.az reports. 

Referring to Resolution 1738 of the UN Security Council, Hajiyev noted that “journalists, media professionals, associated personnel engaged in dangerous professional missions in areas of armed conflict shall be considered as civilians, respected and protected.”

On the morning of June 4, 2021, a vehicle carrying members of the film crew hit an anti-tank mine on the road in Susuzlug village of Kalbajar region. As a result of the explosion, two members of the film crew, cameraman of Azerbaijan Television Siraj Abishov and correspondent of the Azerbaijan State News Agency Maharram Ibrahimov, as well as representative of the district executive power Arif Aliyev were killed and four people were injured.
