PACE’s rapporteur on the humanitarian consequences of the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Paul Gavan, today welcomed the news of the release of 15 Armenian detainees and the handing over to Azerbaijan of a map showing almost 100,000 landmines in the Aghdam region, AzVision.az reports citing PACE.
“It is extremely important to take steps to diminish the humanitarian consequences of this long-standing conflict that erupted into a six-week war last year,” Gavan said.
“Today we can welcome that both sides, with the assistance and support of various international actors, have worked together to find some solutions on two of the most important humanitarian consequences of the war.”
Note, on June 12, Azerbaijan returned 15 detained Armenians back to Armenia with the participation of Georgian representatives on the Azerbaijani-Georgian border on June 12, 2021, in exchange for providing the Azerbaijani side with maps of 97,000 anti-tank and anti-personnel mines in Azerbaijan’s Aghdam district, liberated from Armenian occupation.
