Baku-hosted international conference on Islamophobia ends

A Baku-hosted international conference entitled "Islamophobia as a specific form of racism and discrimination: New Global and transnational challenges", co-organized by the Baku International Multiculturalism Center (BIMC), the Center of Analysis of International Relations (AIR Center) and the G20 Interfaith Forum, has ended, AzVision.az reports.

The second day of the conference featured a plenary session themed "Colonialism, new imperialism and the intersection of Islamophobia: Historical and Contemporary Perspectives" and three intermediate sessions entitled "Islamophobia and hatred in the media", "Joint cooperation and the role of international organizations in the fight against Islamophobia" and "Building harmonious societies by promoting religious diversity and inter-religious respect".

The 2nd session was moderated by Farid Shafiyev, Chairman of the Center of Analysis of International Relations (AIR Center).

The speakers noted the cruelty and torture committed by Armenians against peaceful Azerbaijani people in Karabakh, as well as double standards towards Islam and pressures against Muslims, stressing that some of the caricatures draw a coarse equation of Islam with violence through Prophet Muhammad`s image.

Highlighting Islam as a religion of tolerance and peace, the speakers underlined that Christians had always lived in peace and comfort in Muslim countries.

The intermediate sessions were moderated by Rufat Hamzayev, Deputy Chairman of Azerbaijan Television and Radio Broadcasting (AZTV), Ayten Kahraman, adviser of the Baku International Multiculturalism Center (BBMM) and Agil Shirinov, Rector of Azerbaijan Institute of Theology, respectively.

The conference was rounded off with adoption of a joint communiqué.
