Infrastructure of European Games in Baku to be based on "cloud" technologies
European Games, which will be held in Baku in 2015, will become the first sport competitions, where "cloud" technology will be widely used, the Ministry of Communications and High Technologies of Azerbaijan said Dec.16.

Infrastructure and software solutions that will be used within the competition, will be based on the "cloud" technology, and the established infrastructure will be used in other grand sporting events, which will be held in the country, according to the ministry.

A cable infrastructure with a total length of over 600 kilometers was created in order to ensure high-speed data transfer between the sport facilities. Over 1,000 kilometers of optical lines for interspaced information exchange have been laid. All work on the creation of telecommunication infrastructure is supervised by the ministry.

The ministry told earlier that as part of the preparatory work, it is provided to provide facilities, where competitions will be held, and other places associated with the games with a stable and high-quality communication, create alternative lines using wireless technologies and resources of the Azerspace-1 Azerbaijani satellite, information security of Internet resources and operator networks.

As part of the work, ISDN (Integrated Services for Digital Network) services will be offered, infrastructure for access to the internet will be expanded, free Wi-Fi networks will be provided in public places (parks, stadiums, shopping and entertainment centers), the ministry told earlier.

It is also planned to carry work on organizing a qualitative and sustainable infrastructure for broadcasting (including broadcasting in HD format).

Baku 2015 is the first European Games, an exciting and innovative multi-sport event for the continent that will take place from June 12-28, 2015.

There will be a total of 20 sports at Baku 2015: 16 Olympic sports and four non-Olympic sports. More than 6,000 athletes from across Europe will be representing their nations over 17 days of competition.

Eleven of the sports will offer qualification opportunities for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Those sports include Archery, Athletics, Boxing, Cycling, Shooting, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Triathlon, Wrestling and Volleyball.

The European Olympic Committees (EOC) awarded Baku the games in December 2012. The Baku European Games Operations Committee (BEGOC) will organise and run the Games in co-operation with the EOC.
