`Azerbaijan’s independence was initially based on not-so-right postulate`
25 years have been years of prosperity and development for Azerbaijan, Deputy Prime Minister, Deputy Chairman and Executive Secretary of New Azerbaijan Party (YAP) Ali Ahmadov said in his speech at the conference titled “The 25 Years of Independence: Peers of the Independence” organized by YAP.
"The history of independent Azerbaijan can be divided into the period from 1991 to Heydar Aliyev’s return to power, the period of protection of the independence and the period of state development under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev. The most significant event in 1991 was the adoption of the 18 October Independence Act. But the ensuing events, anarchy created a serious threat to our independence. On the other hand, our independence was based on not-so-right postulate. The slogan was "It’s better to be hungry but independent. The people desires independence for their well-being. People need to see the benefits of independence, or independence would be turned into a hazy dream that is unattainable. During the reign of Heydar Aliyev, the people realized that independence is a reality that serves the people. Heydar Aliyev stabilized the situation, restored peace, put a stop to the Armenian aggression, and carried out economic reforms. During the rein of Ilham Aliyev, Azerbaijan’s independence became stronger, all spheres began to develop,” he said.

Ahmadov said that more economic development is a basic prerequisite for our independence to be lasting.

"Important steps will be taken to improve the living conditions of citizens. The development and modernization of Azerbaijan are the main parameters of the president`s policies. Creating a new economic model will create a valuable foundation for the development of economy and society of Azerbaijan," said Ahmadov.

He added that the past 25 years are the "golden period in the history of Azerbaijan"

“The standard of living of the Azerbaijani people, their well-being will be improved. When we gained independence, the number of our population was 7 million. Soon we will have 10 million population. This is yet another indicative of development. Armenia had 3 million population in the 1990’s, but now there live about 2.5 million people. It shows the difference in development. Our coming years will be even better,” he said.
