EU’s Mogherini reiterates importance of respect for fundamental freedoms, human rights
The EU always stresses the importance of respect for fundamental freedoms and human rights, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Federica Mogherini said at a joint press conference with Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov.

The press conference was held following the 15th meeting of the EU-Azerbaijan Cooperation Council in Brussels on Feb. 9.

“During the meeting with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Mammadyarov, we discussed issues of democracy, the rule of law and human rights,” Mogherini said, noting that the EU regards these issues as part of a solid foundation for mutually beneficial cooperation.

“For us, it is very important that Azerbaijan fulfils its international obligations in this direction. This includes recommendations related to the conduct of elections in accordance with international standards, freedom of assembly and media. This is especially important in the current pre-election situation in Azerbaijan. The EU always emphasizes the importance of respect for fundamental freedoms and human rights,” she added.
