Azerbaijani community in the UK is concerned about Bako Sahakyan’s visit to the U.S

A group of Azerbaijanis living in the UK supported their compatriots in the U.S. and made a plea to the U.S. Ambassador in the UK regarding the visit of Bako Sahakyan to the U.S. Congress.

In the document they stressed that the conflict began in 1988 when Armenia started to make claims against Azerbaijan territory. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. It was also mentioned that the 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations while The U.S. has been at the forefront of international negotiation efforts.

Azerbaijanis living in the UK stressed that “Armenia has still not implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from Karabakh, where it installed a puppet regime headed by Bako Sahakyan. It is well-documented by many international organisations that Bako Sahakyan was directly involved in the killing of innocent people. Tens of thousands of Azeris have been killed and injured, and many more kidnapped. We were deeply saddened to learn that Bako Sahakyan is to visit the U.S. Congress this week with the help of lobbying groups. We believe that by visiting the US Congress he is attempting to give legitimacy to his illegal regime.”

The embassy of Azerbaijan in the UK is also concerned about the visit of Bako Sahakyan to the United States. Ambassador of Azerbaijan to the United Kingdom, H.E. Tahir Taghizade said: “Being aware of the importance of the issues of territorial sovereignty for Azerbaijani society as a whole as well as acknowledging steps undertaken by the leadership of Azerbaijan and Azerbaijani embassy in this regard the organisers of the petition decided to make contribution to this greater cause.”
