‘I think we must think of making mutual investments in other fields too. These issues were discussed at yesterday’s meeting. Extra directions for mutual investments are being determined. I can surely say that the North-South transport corridor is realized thanks to efforts by Iran and Azerbaijan. We discuss this issue with neighboring countries. Works done during past two years provided basis for launch of this corridor. The presentation showed that missing part of this railway was built in Azerbaijan I 2016-2017, a bridge was constructed on the River Astara. First trial train crossed to Iran from Azerbaijan last year, when I was on a visit to Iran. Today, a cargo terminal is already being built and a historical document was signed yesterday. An agreement on construction of Astara-Rasht railway was signed’, he said.
The president noted that this agreement will play a special role in realization of North-South corridor: ‘So, we’ll derive economic benefit by connecting continents, because cargos passing through our territory will amount to ten million tonnes, and at the same time we create a new cooperation format in the region. We have already created it. Because we now cooperate in trilateral, even four-sided formats. Azerbaijani, Iranian and Russian presidents met in Baku in 2016, Tehran in 2017. These meetings attach great importance. Political, economic, transport and energy issues were discussed at the meetings. I think businessmen of three countries should use existing opportunity. Azerbaijan-Iran-Turkey trilateral format has been existing for years. Recently, four-sided cooperation format was realized in Baku – Azerbaijan, Iran, Georgia and Turkey’.
