Tehran, Baku enjoy great potential for enhanced ties: Iran’s Shamkhani

Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani said Tehran and Baku have great potential to improve relations in different sectors, particularly economy.

“Iran and Azerbaijan enjoy many cultural and historical commonalities and can forge closer ties given to their business opportunities and interests,” Shamkhani said in a meeting with Azerbaijan's Interior Minister Ramil Usubov in Tehran late on Monday, Mehr news agency reported on September 25.

The two nations have great potential to boost their bilateral ties in the field of economy and bring about peace and progress for each other, he added.

Shamkhani further highlighted the threat of terrorism and called for concerted action against the phenomenon.

Usubov, for his part, expressed condolences to the Iranian nation and government over a recent terrorist attack in the southwestern city of Ahvaz.

He added that Baku was ready to enhance its all-out ties with Tehran, including economy and fighting against terrorism.

The Azerbaijani minister arrived in the Iranian capital on Monday. He is scheduled to hold talks with Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani, Intelligence Minister Mahmoud Alavi, and Police Chief Brigadier General Hossein Ashtari.
