In a significant step towards resolving a long-standing dispute, Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed to use the 1991 Alma-Ata Declaration as the foundation for delimiting their shared border. This decision came during the eighth meeting of their respective state commissions on border issues.
The Alma-Ata Declaration was a key document signed by former Soviet republics following the USSR's collapse. It established principles for newly independent states to inherit their borders based on those of the Soviet administrative divisions.
While both sides agreed to incorporate this principle into a draft regulation, they acknowledged the possibility of future adjustments. The final border agreement could supersede the Alma-Ata Declaration's role if a broader peace deal is reached between the two nations.
