Azerbaijan hopes for Russia’s active role in settlement of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict

Azerbaijan hopes Russia, as a co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group, will play an active role in resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, said Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov.

Bayramov made the remarks Wednesday at a joint press conference with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Moscow, AzVision.az reports.

“There is no progress in the settlement of the conflict,” said the minister, pointing out that Armenia continues the occupation of Azerbaijani territories.

The minister also noted that Armenia is conducting the illegal resettlement of ethnic Armenians from the Middle East in the occupied Azerbaijani territories, which constitutes a flagrant violation of humanitarian law.

“The July 12 clashes in Tovuz are a clear manifestation of this. Armenia resorted to another military provocation to occupy new territories. As a result of the Armenian provocation, a 76-year-old Azerbaijani civilian was killed,” he said.

Bayramov went on to say that the Armenian provocation had several purposes. “By committing a military provocation in the direction of Azerbaijan’s Tovuz district, the Armenian leadership tried to divert attention from internal problems. Moreover, important projects run through this ditrict.”

The minister accused Armenia of continuing its military provocations.

“On August 23, a reconnaissance and sabotage group of the Armenian armed forces made an attempt to attack Azerbaijan’s positions. The attack was repulsed, and the commander of the reconnaissance and sabotage group was taken prisoner,” he said.

Bayramov noted that Azerbaijan’s position on the conflict resolution is based on international law and the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

He urged the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs to influence Armenia so that it takes a more constructive position to continue substantive negotiations.
