Geneva Press Club urges int’l support for Azerbaijan’s mine action

The Geneva Press Club has organized an event entitled “The path to eradicate landmines in Azerbaijan: an international challenge”, AzVision.az reports.

The event aims to raise awareness about landmines and progress toward their eradication, said a message posted on the Press Club’s website.

The main goal of the event is to support the efforts to clear landmines and explosive remnants of war and to mark and fence off dangerous areas.

The event highlights the situation of Azerbaijan as a case which is one of the most tragical stories which within we meet the human suffering through death & injury, constraint for reconstruction of infrastructure, impediment to rehabilitation of settlements and IDP/Refugee return, blockage for economic activities such as agricultural production, its complex story that needs coherence and international solidarity, for this purpose the IRDG is holding this conference.

The Institute for Rights & Development – Geneva (IRDG) is deeply concern by the threat to the population posed by explosive remnants of war left on the Azerbaijan territory. Azerbaijan is currently addressing the clearance of remnants of war with all the means at its disposal, but it is also working to address the social inclusion of seven hundred fifty thousand internally displaced people. There will be no possible return for the population until the region has been cleared completely from its remnants of war.

Despite resources allocated by Azerbaijan, demining operations require large amounts of funds. Therefore, international community support through fundraising initiatives is essential to address effectively the remnants of war issue in Azerbaijan.

International assistance will help save lives, enable IDPs to return to their homes in safety and dignity, and bring sustainable development to the affected territories and people.

Azerbaijan has launched the large-scale construction and restoration work in its territories liberated from the Armenian occupation following the 44-day Patriotic War.

The landmines Armenia had planted in the de-occupied territories of Azerbaijan remain a major impediment to the ongoing restoration work. The Ministry of Defense and the Azerbaijan Mine Action Agency (ANAMA) continue demining operations in the country’s liberated territories.

As of April 4, 2022, nearly 14,600 hectares of land in the liberated Azerbaijani territories have been cleared of landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO). A total of 6,000 anti-personnel and over 2,100 anti-tank landmines, as well as 9,300 UXOs have been found and neutralized in the liberated Azerbaijani lands.
