Over 111,000 hectares of liberated Azerbaijani territories demined: ANAMA

“The scope of mine problem in Azerbaijan is extremely large. According to preliminary estimates, about 1.5 million landmines were planted in the liberated territories, with about 9,000 square kilometers of territory contaminated with mines,” said Chairman of the Board of Azerbaijan’s Mine Action Agency (ANAMA) Vugar Suleymanov as he addressed the 2nd International Workshop on "Mine action: innovations and best practices" held in Baku, AzVision.az reports.

Suleymanov emphasized that as a result of demining operations conducted from November 2020 until now, a total of 111,207 hectares of territory had been cleared of mines and explosive remnants of war. “In total, 109,552 mines and other explosive remnants of war, including 30,753 anti-personnel mines, 18,531 anti-tank mines and 60,268 unexploded military munitions were neutralized,” he noted.

“It is necessary to maintain close cooperation in this field, share knowledge and experiences, and create a mine-free world by joining global efforts,” the chairman added.
