In his remarks, Stiell emphasized the importance of collaboration, urging parties to avoid getting bogged down in "individual trees" and instead focus on the broader forest of global climate efforts. He cautioned against the dangerous practice of "you-first-ism," where groups of parties refuse to make progress on one issue unless others make concessions first—a tactic he warned could derail negotiations and set back global climate action at a time when momentum is needed.
“We cannot afford to waste time on brinksmanship or premeditated tactics that only drain goodwill,” Stiell said. “Bluffing and theatrics won’t get us anywhere. We need to focus on solutions and move forward together.”
Stiell acknowledged the challenges facing negotiators but stressed the importance of turning those challenges into opportunities for collaboration. He praised the efforts of the COP29 Presidency, highlighting their dedication and impartial approach in guiding the process. He also reaffirmed the commitment of the UN Climate Change Secretariat to support all parties in a fair and inclusive manner.
“We have a clear path ahead,” Stiell said. “Now is the time to get to work. We have the solutions; we just need to bring them to life. Let’s focus on action and finish what we’ve started.”
Stiell concluded his remarks with a call for collective effort, urging all parties to move forward in parallel to achieve a successful and ambitious outcome at COP29.
