Iran, Russia in talks to stretch shipping canal from Caspian Sea to Persian Gulf

Iran, Russia in talks to stretch shipping canal from Caspian Sea to Persian Gulf

Iran and Russia are discussing a shipping canal to connect the Caspian Sea to the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman, according to Iranian Ambassador to Moscow Mehdi Sanai.

He made the statements on the sidelines of a meeting with university students in Saint Petersburg, Tasnim news agency reported April 8.

The Caspian Sea is the world`s largest inland body of water. The shoreline is 7,000 kilometers long and connects Iran, Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Azerbaijan together.

Iran, Azerbaijan, and Russia are already in the process of launching a combined transit line that connects Russia to India.

Called the North-South Transport Corridor, the line line will reduce India-Russia shipment time from 40 days to 14.
