Baby monkey stolen from NSW zoo found by police
Police have found a four-week-old monkey stolen from a New South Wales zoo that wildlife carers said could have died if it was not reunited with its distressed mother.
The baby was one of three rare pygmy marmoset monkeys taken from Symbio Wildlife Park, an hour’s drive south of Sydney, on Friday night.

Police arrested two men after appeals to the public for information about the monkeys. The baby monkey was found in the car and the pair were taken to Campbelltown police station where they were assisting police with inquiries.

The baby monkey was being taken back to the wildlife park for further examination and care, according to a police statement. The whereabouts of the two other monkeys are unknown.

The park’s Facebook post on Sunday had pleaded for people to share information to help track down the stolen primates.

“We are still appealing for your help to spread the word,” the post said.

“Our primary concerns are for our four-week-old baby who has been separated from mum for 36 hours now, so time is crucial to get this little one reunited with mum to enable him/her to feed.”

The park said it was likely that the baby, who was still dependent on its mother, would die if it was not found by Sunday.

A zookeeper told police the monkey’s twin, who was left at the zoo, could also die because the mother was too stressed to feed it.

Two other pygmy marmoset monkeys the father, called Gomez, aged 10, and a young female, called Sophia, 1, were also stolen from the Symbio Wildlife Park.

No witnesses have come forward yet and police are appealing to the public for help.

In April a video of an orphaned koala at the park which cuddled it’s keeper received millions of views online.
