Ghost in the Shell tops international box office as Beaty and the Beast nears $1 billion worldwide
Somehow, Ghost in the Shell has managed a rather strange accomplishment. , the Scarlett Johansson flick has grossed $41.3 million over the weekend after the opening in China and Japan, topping the worldwide box office.
However, analysts still expect the film to lose Paramount millions, some putting the figure around $60 million. Why? Numerous reasons have already been given, including negative reviews and whitewashing controversy.

The next biggest knock to Ghost in the Shell’s global takings will be The Fate of The Furious, the Vin Diesel-led blockbuster that follows Furious 7, a film that took $1.516 billion at the box office and remains the highest-grossing foreign film ever in China.

Following relatively positive reviews, the upcoming eighth instalment will no doubt become the second film this year to open with a US domestic gross over $100 million.

Over in the US, Ghost in the Shell dipped over 60% while Boss Baby continues to hold the top spot, keeping Beauty and the Beast at bay, the Disney film fast approaching the $1 billion mark.

Meanwhile, a new animated version of Ghost in the Shell is currently being produced by publisher Kodansha and Japan-headquartered animation company Production I.G.
