The European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker was forced to interrupt an Egypt summit press conference after his “insistent” wife called multiple times during his speech. The first time Mr Juncker’s phone went off he apologised and reached into his pocket to silence the ringtone. However, after a third call he stopped and said: “I will stop here because my phone is ringing, I apologise.”
After picking up the phone, much to the surprise of the audience, the European Commission president said some hushed words to the phone before again addressing the room.
He said: “It was the usual suspect, my wife, that was it.
“I have to stop here because she will not stop there.”
The crowd then erupted in laughter at Mr Juncker’s comments.
Theresa May and other EU political figures are currently in Egypt for the European Union and League of Arab States summit.
The two-day summit is held in the International Congress Centre in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.
Despite the new summit's purpose being to discuss the security and economic crises between the two groups, Brexit has infiltrated talks as the leaving date for the UK draws closer.
Top eurocrat Donald Tusk today told Theresa May a delay to Brexit was the "rational solution" to prevent chaos.
Speaking to reporters in Egypt, Mr Tusk said: “Now in order to put an end to speculation, I can say, first of all, Prime Minister May and I discussed, yesterday, a number of issues, including the legal and procedural context of an extension.
“For me, it is obviously clear that there is no majority in the House of Commons to approve a deal… We face an alternative, a chaotic Brexit or extension.
“The closer the time until March 29, the greater likelihood of an extension. And this is an objective fact, not our intention, not our plan.
“I believe that in the situation we are in an extension would be a rational solution but Prime Minister May still believes she is able to avoid this scenario.
“And I can assure you, and I did it yesterday during my meeting with Prime Minister May, no matter what scenario will be all 27 will show maximum understanding and goodwill.”
