GUAM official assured of European Games
The European Games in Baku will be the first in history, and it is significant and revealing that the unanimous decision was made to hold these games in Azerbaijan, Valeri Chechelashvili, the Secretary General of the GUAM Organization for Democracy and Economic Development, told on May 18.

He said the main reason why it is right to hold the European Games in Azerbaijan is that the country is very well positioned in international relations as a multicultural country, which is very tolerant of national minorities and does everything for their development.

“Azerbaijan has done a lot in terms of development of sports infrastructure, and I believe it is possible to hold in Azerbaijan not only the European Games, but also the events of a larger scale,” said Chechelashvili.

“The European Games is the first trial of strength, then the Islamic solidarity games will be held, and I am convinced that these events will enjoy a great success,” he added.

Baku 2015 is the first-ever European Games, an exciting and innovative multi-sport event for the continent that will take place on June 12-28, 2015.

There will be a total of 20 sports at Baku 2015: 16 Olympic sports and four non-Olympic sports. More than 6,000 athletes from across Europe will be representing their nations over 17 days of competition.

Baku was awarded the games by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in December 2012.
