It's the most powerful storm the Caribbean islands of the Bahamas has experienced since records began with winds of 180 mph.
It has been given category five status which is the highest-ranking for hurricanes, and Dorian has been described as "extremely dangerous" by US President Donald Trump.
According to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC), the storm is moving westwards and is expected to reach the US east coast.
The government in the Bahamas has opened 14 shelters and named dozens of churches, schools and other buildings on its official lists of emergency shelters.
