Chirac served as French prime minister twice and was mayor of Paris from 1977 to 1995.
The politician, who joined conservative and Gaullist Rally for the Republic in seventies, known for his economic policies, based on dirigisme, allowing for state-directed investment.
Chirac also opposed the American-led assault on Iraq and reducted the presidential term from 7 years to 5 through a referendum in 2000.
