The Egyptian army and police killed at least 118 terrorists during recent raids in North and Central Sinai, the Egyptian military said in a statement on Friday, Xinhua reports.

"Guns of different types and improvised explosive devices ready for explosion were found in their possession," the statement added, noting that the raids took place over the past few days until Friday.

It pointed out that the forces found and destroyed 33 hideouts, 237 explosive devices, 152 vehicles and 42 motorbikes belonging to the terrorists.

Meanwhile, a military officer and nine soldiers were either killed or injured during the raids or at checkpoints, according to the statement, which didn't specify how many were killed or injured.

Terror activities in Egypt have killed hundreds of policemen, soldiers and civilians since the military ousted former President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013 in response to mass protests against his one-year rule and his currently outlawed Muslim Brotherhood group.

A Sinai-based terrorist group loyal to the Islamic State regional group claimed responsibility for most of the terror attacks in Egypt over the past few years.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian forces killed hundreds of terrorists and arrested thousands of suspects during the country's anti-terror war declared by President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, the army chief then, following Morsi's ouster.
