Chinese state media have said the suspect is a security guard who worked at the kindergarten in the Guangxi region.

At least 39 people have been injured in a knife attack on a nursery in southern China, state media has said.

The attacker has been identified as a security guard at the kindergarten with the surname Li.

State broadcaster China Central TV said three people have been seriously injured, including the head of the nursery, another security guard and a student.

The local government in Cangwu County in the Guangxi region said 37 students and two adults suffered injuries of varying degrees in the attack on Thursday morning.

No motive was known and the suspect has been detained while an investigation is under way, the local government added.

The attack was an eerie throwback to deadly attacks at schools in China over past years that prompted security upgrades.
