PACE did not show perseverance on this issue - Kamal Jafarov

"Everyone knows the statement of the European Parliament dated June 10, 2020. I suppose, this statement is a legal, as well as political assessment on the occupation of Nagorno-Karabakh and surrounding regions by Armenia,"Azerbaijani MP, member of the EU-Azerbaijan Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Committee Kamal Jafarov said at the meeting of Azerbaijan's Milli Majlis.

"The main importance of this statement is that for the first time European Institutions react to Armenia's illegal activities in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, stating that such activities contradict international law and peace negotiations.

Armenia must be ready to such international reactions committing illegal activities in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan. Indeed this statement set a new precedent. Besides, it should be noted that PACE must play an active role in settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. PACE should not remain indifferent to fate of hundreds of thousands of Azerbaijanis who became IDPs. PACE Resolution 1416 (2005) is of utmost importance. This document requires the establishment of a sub-committee on the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. However, sub-committee halted its operation as a result of Armenia's non-constructive approach. PACE did not show perseverance on this issue. However, co-rapporteur of the PACE Monitoring Committee on Azerbaijan Stefan Schennach tried to present the episodic event in legal and democratic states as the main policy of the country.

Yesterday I shared a post on the statement of the European Parliament on Facebook. Although this statement is both legally and politically important,  I observe that the public has lost confidence in the reactions of international organizations. Stefan Schennach's reactions do not affect the public opinion and political discussions in our country. The influence of social bloggers on public opinion is greater than that of Stefan Schennach. When Stefan Schennach show determination in settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and dare to react to the police atrocities in the Western countries, Azerbaijani people are likely to believe him."
