Russia calls on Azerbaijan and Armenia to show restraint

Russia will use every opportunity to solve the current escalation of tense on Armenian and Azerbaijani border, said Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko, AzVision.az reports citing TASS.

“Indeed, this problem is very complex and, unfortunately, in recent days we all have seen an escalation of the tension between Azerbaijan and Armenia. I would like to clarify what is happening now and has happened in recent days. This situation is not linked with the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, it is directly related to the clashes on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border which is internationally recognized. We are very concerned about what is happening and call the sides to show restraint, and have negotiations to prevent a similar kind of incidents in the future” Deputy FM Andrey Rudenko said.

“Unfortunately, the confrontation on the border continues and there was another outbreak last night. Unfortunately, there are casualties on both sides, and we extend our deepest sympathies to the families of the victims and wish a speedy recovery to those injured”, Andrey Rudenko noted.

Deputy FM highlighted the possible impact of the situation on the security of the entire region: “There are no diplomatic relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict remains unresolved.  In this regard, the role of mediators and OSCE Minsk Group Co-chairs is really important. Currently, they are having intensive contacts with both the Armenian and Azerbaijani sides. We do hope that their efforts will allow both sides to benefit from the outcome. The main thing now is to stop the bloodshed on the border and to be actively involved in the settlement of the conflict and to enhance OSCE mediation efforts".
