Azerbaijani, Russian FMs hold phone conversation

Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov on Wednesday held a phone conversation with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov.

Expressing his concern over the ongoing tensions in the region, Lavrov emphasized the importance of reaching a ceasefire, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry told AzVision.az.

He proposed Russia’s mediation efforts both at the national level and together with other the Minsk Group co-chairs in order to defuse the tensions.

Minister Bayramov, in turn, blamed Armenia for escalating the situation in the region. He noted that since September 27, the Azerbaijani Army has been conducting counterattacks along the line of contact in response to a new act of aggression by Armenia within the framework of the right to self-defense and to protect the civilian population.

The minister added that Armenia, in a gross violation of fundamental norms and principles of international law, including humanitarian law, continues shelling Azerbaijani civilians. Minister Bayramov informed his Russian counterpart that the Armenian shelling caused casualties among Azerbaijani civilians.
