Farid Shafiyev comments on French President Macron

French President Emmanuel Macron’s statement on the recent events in the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict indicates France’s support to the position of the Armenian side at this difficult and tense stage, said Farid Shafiyev Chairman of the Baku-based Center of Analysis of International Relations while commenting on French president’s recent statement and biased position, Azvision.az reports.

"This situation raises serious question about France's role as co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group. The relevant French officials should make a statement regarding France’s position on the conflict as a mediator," Farid Shafiyev said.

“Also, in recent days, some Western media outlets, including the BBC, Reuters and the Guardian, have been spreading fake news and unsubstantiated information about the arrival of mercenaries from Syria to Azerbaijan. Unfortunately, some Western media have remained biased against Azerbaijan for 100 years. Back in 1905, during Tsarist Russia, when panic broke out between Armenians and Azerbaijanis, Islamophobic and Turkophobic discourses were present in the Western media. Western media are well aware that Azerbaijan is a secular country. Azerbaijan closely cooperates with the United States and other countries in the combat against terrorism, and Azerbaijan has made significant contributions to the strengthening of international security. Currently, Azerbaijan is carrying out military operations to liberate its territories from Armenian occupation based on international law. In this case, a biased position of the Western institutions; including media against our country calls into question their professional objectivity.

Another issue is that several international organizations and countries call for the resumption of talks on the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. At this point, the question is: What kind of talks are we talking about? Armenia demands a change in the format of talks within the OSCE Minsk Group. It rejects the Madrid Principles, which have been discussed and agreed upon for more than 10 years. In this case, we can say that all the responsibility for the tense situation lies entirely with the political and military leadership of Armenia”, Shafiyev added.
