Representatives of Ombudsman's Office visit Armenian captives

The members of the National Preventive Group (NPG) continue carrying out visits without prior notice to the temporary detention centres under the instructions of the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Sabina Aliyeva, AzVision.az reports. 

The press service of the Ombudsman's Office told AzVision.az that these visits were organized in regard with the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment and Constitutional Law on Human Rights Commissioner (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan aiming to investigate the conditions of detention in these centres, prisoners of war, the norms of international humanitarian law, as well as the treatment of hostages based on the Geneva Conventions, the protection of their rights. 

During the visit, the prisoners of war and hostages from Armenia were received individually, their appeals were heard, and their rights were explained to them by presenting legislative acts in their own languages regarding the appeal mechanisms.

They were examined on the basis of the Ombudsman's appeals with the participation of a doctor from the National Preventive Group. The necessary medical and psychological services were provided to them without any distinction, and the norms of international humanitarian law, in particular the provisions of the Geneva Conventions, were observed.
