The company that operates the Eurotunnel linking France and Britain is asking the two governments to kick in 9.7 million euros ($10.6 million) to cope with an influx of migrants in the port city of Calais, where thousands are camped in hopes of stowing away, hoping for a better life in England.
In financial results Wednesday, Groupe Eurotunnel said it spent 13 million euros ($14.2 million) on security in the first half of 2015, as much as it spent for all of 2014. Trucks and passenger cars load onto the Eurotunnel at Calais, in northernmost France, and migrants have used traffic delays and recent disruptions by striking French ferry workers to try to board vehicles.
