Azerbaijan to host next meeting of Parliamentary Network of Non-Aligned Movement

An inaugural meeting of the Parliamentary Network of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) was held on the sidelines of the 143rd Assembly of the organization’s Inter-Parliamentary Union that is underway in Madrid.

The Parliamentary Network was established on the initiative of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev as the chair of the Non-Aligned Movement, the country’s Foreign Ministry told AzVision.az.

The inaugural meeting was chaired by Sahiba Gafarova, Speaker of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis (parliament).

The NAM member states highly appreciated Azerbaijan’s important initiative to establish the Parliamentary Network, pledging active work within the Network.

The Network, which will enable parliaments to contribute to the promotion of fundamental values and principles of the NAM, providing parliamentary support for decisions taken by the member states, and addressing issues of common interest, will serve as a new platform for multilateral cooperation in the fight against emerging global risks and threats.

The Madrid Declaration was unanimously adopted following the meeting. The declaration underlines that the Parliamentary Network will contribute to the activities of the Movement. The document also notes that the next meeting of the Parliamentary Network will be held in Azerbaijan next year.
