Corsicans call France’s new bill “shameful”

Corsicans refuse to accept the decision of the court of the city of Bastia, which prohibits the use of their native language, AzVision.az reports citing Le Figaro newspaper.

Gilles Simeoni, the chairman of the executive council of Corsica and one of the leaders of the nationalist coalition “For Corsica” and Marie-Antoinette Maupertuis, the head of the assembly of Corsica said in a joint statement that “it is unthinkable to accept this situation.”

“This decision of the court and its motivation only confirm the absolute need for a revision of the constitution, in particular, to guarantee the status of official status of the Corsican language (on a par with French) - an indispensable condition for its survival and development,” they add.

Corsica’s pro-independence party, Core in Fronte, in turn, condemned the court’s decision on Twitter, calling it “shameful.” In addition, the head of the Party of the Corsican Nation, Jean-Christophe Angelini, also reacted on Twitter, writing that the court’s decision “sounds like an insult to us.”

Earlier, UN Special Rapporteur on Minority Issues Fernand de Varennes condemned this decision of the court.

“To allow only French to be used in Corsica is a discrimination and a violation of international law. Thus, as long as English is used in public universities, Corsican is prohibited.”
