Alakbarli made these remarks during public hearings on “Toponyms of Western Azerbaijan: From distortion of history to restoration of justice” in parliament, AzVision.az reports.
“Armenians have carried out ethnic cleansing over the last 200 years. Armenians have always taken a biased position towards toponyms of Azerbaijani and Turkic origin. Toponyms of Turkic origin in Western Azerbaijan - present-day Armenia - have been changed by Armenians for a long time. This has been proven by facts and Armenia intends to erase the traces of Azerbaijanis on these lands,” he said.
Alakbarli noted that 93 settlements were renamed upon the decree of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic, dated January 25, 1978.
Noting that changing these toponyms is contrary to the law, he said that an e-map of Western Azerbaijan has been prepared.
He added that the original geographical names have been indicated on the map.
