Reclaiming roots: A journey of liberation and gratitude

Ayshan Aslan-Mammadli, a lecturer at Baku State University, shares a deeply personal story of her family's return to their ancestral village in Azerbaijan after 32 years of displacement due to the Armenian occupation.

AzVision.az presents the story below:

"In a tale as old as time, etched with the echoes of ancestral whispers and the resilience of the human spirit, lies the story of my family’s return to our cherished homeland—a narrative of gratitude, liberation, and the indomitable will of the Azerbaijani people.

Nestled within the folds of my heart resides an overwhelming sense of thankfulness, a sentiment that transcends mere words and finds solace in the embrace of our reclaimed soil. With deep reverence, I address this letter to President Ilham Aliyev, a beacon of hope in our nation’s darkest hours, to express our profound appreciation for the restoration of our ancestral lands after three decades of forced exile under Armenian occupation.

As a child torn from the cradle of my forefathers’ legacy, my memories of the village of Zabukh in the Lachin district of Azerbaijan are shrouded in the shadows of displacement and longing. Yet, today, on the wings of Novruz, our family reunites amidst the whispers of ancient traditions, marking a poignant milestone in our journey back to where we belong.

Thirty-two years have passed since I last felt the earth beneath my feet in the land of my ancestors—a land scarred by conflict, yet adorned with the resilience of its people. With tears of joy streaming down our cheeks, we kneel beside the resting place of my grandfather, a testament to the unbreakable bond that transcends time and space.

The path to our homeland was paved with the sacrifices of heroes—brave souls who dared to dream of a future where justice reigns supreme. In the hallowed halls of history, their names shall forever be inscribed, their valor immortalized in the annals of our nation’s liberation.

To President Ilham Aliyev, our steadfast leader and guardian of our collective dreams, we extend our deepest gratitude. Your unwavering commitment to the cause of justice and the preservation of our national identity has been the compass guiding our nation through the storm.

As we stand on the threshold of a new era, united in our determination to build a future worthy of the sacrifices made by those who came before us, we look to you with renewed hope and unwavering faith. May your vision continue to inspire and guide us as we embark on this journey of nation-building and reconciliation.

In closing, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to President Ilham Aliyev and his family on the occasion of Novruz—a celebration of new beginnings, renewal, and the eternal cycle of life.

With sincere appreciation and boundless optimism".
