Chile to build 1st earthquake research center
Chile announced said on Thursday that it intends to create its first high-level seismological center to share its ample experience in dealing with earthquakes with other countries.
Chilean Vice Minister of the Interior Mahmud Aleuy made the proposal during a meeting with a group of politicians, academics and experts, which was held to discuss Chile`s seismological defenses in the future and how to share its know-how with the rest of the world.

Aleuy said Chile is the most seismically active in the world and was hit by the largest earthquake ever detected -- the Valdivia earthquake of 1960 measuring 9.5 on the Richter scale.

Patricio Aceituno, dean of physical science at the University of Chile, called the country a natural laboratory which can collect in a month the same amount of data that other countries would spend years to compile.
