Date and time set for crunch vote on von der Leyen in European Parliament

Ursula von der Leyen’s future as president of the European Commission will be decided on Thursday, July 18 at 1 p.m.

That’s when members of the European Parliament will vote on whether she should get a second term. For that to happen, she needs 361 votes (out of 720 MEPs).

The final decision on the date was made at a meeting of the Conference of Presidents — the Parliament’s most senior officials.

According to the Parliament’s agenda for next week in Strasbourg, there will be a statement from von der Leyen at 9 a.m. followed by a debate until 11 a.m.

The vote will start at 1 p.m. After 30 minutes for MEPs to vote on paper, the votes will be counted and then announced at around 2:45 p.m.

If von der Leyen fails to get 361 votes, then the EU’s national leaders have to go back to the drawing board and come up with another candidate.
