The death toll from the two landslides in southern Ethiopia has risen to 229, with numbers expected to increase as search and rescue operations continue. The first landslide, triggered by heavy rain, occurred on the night of July 21 in the Gofa zone of the Southern Ethiopia regional state. A second landslide struck the following morning, engulfing those who had gathered to assist the initial victims.
