Serbia fumes after ambassador is attacked on Madrid street

Serbia’s ambassador to Spain was attacked on the streets of Madrid on Sunday, according to Belgrade’s foreign ministry.

Irena Šarac was approached by a man on the street and assaulted, Serbian media reported.

Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Đurić condemned the incident in a statement on social media, calling it “unacceptable.”

“I condemn, in the strongest possible terms, the insidious physical attack on our Ambassador Irena Šarac in downtown Madrid,” he wrote.

“Such acts of violence are unacceptable and must be met with swift and decisive action. We call for a full investigation and accountability for the perpetrator,” he added.

Šarac was appointed ambassador to Spain in April.
