The statement came from former US assistant secretary of state for South Caucasus, former ambassador of the United States, head of the International Center for Defense Studies in Tallinn Matthew Bryza, AzVision.az reports citing Vestnik Kavkaza.
"Sargsyan`s statement is surprizing to me since it goes contrary to the official position of Armenia which it supported for a long time and, according to which, there is an independent `Nagorno Karabakh Republic`, whose `citizens` elect their leader, which governs its economy and legal sphere independently but which is not recognized by Armenia either diplomatically or legally," the expert says.
"It is difficult to say why president Sargsyan made such a statement, except that the government of Armenia has sharply changed its policy. But such a change of policy would become a deep disappointment for many residents of Nagorno Karabakh, especially for the incumbent political leaders of this region," Bryza said.
