Azerbaijani NGOs call on US, EU to strengthen control over Armenia

In an open letter addressed to the leaders of key US and European Union structures responsible for imposing and monitoring sanctions against Russia, Azerbaijani non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have called for stricter control over Armenia's trade operations, AzVision.az reports.

Despite the European Union imposing sanctions on Russia, several EU countries continue to conduct foreign trade operations with the Russian Federation through Armenia.

In 2023, trade between Armenia and the EU increased by 2.4 times compared to 2021, which cannot but cause surprise. During the specified period, Armenia's exports to Greece increased by 39 times, and exports to Cyprus increased by 24 times.

The letter questions how it is possible that, on the one hand, the European Union and the United States impose sanctions against Russia, while on the other hand, the countries responsible for applying these same sanctions participate in Armenia's illegal trade with Russia. "After all, by giving Russia a 'window' in foreign trade, Armenia is indirectly financing this country's war in Ukraine," the letter states.

The NGOs' statement calls on the United States and the European Union to strengthen control over Armenia's trade operations, in particular, to prevent the illegal trade of goods used in military operations, as well as to intensify diplomatic efforts, urging Armenia to stop supporting Russia.
