Azerbaijan's Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov has discussed COP29's energy agenda with the International Energy Agency (IEA) and International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in Brazil, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Energy reported.
According to the source, Shahbazov held the discussion with Executive Director of IEA Fatih Birol, and Director General of IRENA Francesco La Camera within the G20 events in Brazil.
Energy market conditions and outlooks, as well as matters pertaining to collaboration within COP29, were also covered at the meeting with Birol.
The important role of the Global Energy Storage and Grids Pledge initiated by Azerbaijan in the fulfillment of the Global Promise on renewable energy and energy efficiency was discussed.
It was noted that two pledges, including the Green Energy Zones and Corridors, stem from Azerbaijan's experience in this area.
The participation of the agency in the ministerial-level roundtable dedicated to the announcement of the energy initiatives of the COP29 Action Agenda, which will be held on November 15 on Energy Day, and seven events including the expansion of investments to triple renewable sources and double energy efficiency, the rapid decarbonization of the oil and gas industry, building infrastructure to achieve an energy transition, tripling transmission capacity in electrical systems, and cooperation in this context were reviewed.
The sides exchanged views on the 4th High-Level Dialogue on Energy Transition, which will be co-chaired by the Energy Minister and the Executive Director of the Agency.
Also, the proposal to hold an event dedicated to the presentation of the road map on energy efficiency for Azerbaijan prepared by the IEA within the EU4Energy program during the COP was discussed and agreed.
The meeting with La Camera also focused on the events organized jointly with the agency during COP29.
In this regard, the issues of organizing the event Monitoring the Energy Results of the UAE Consensus-Report Launch and the Energy Transition Investment Forum for Central Asia, which will be held during pre - COP29 hosted by Azerbaijan, were discussed.
Additionally, other events and topical issues planned with the participation of IRENA were considered.
This November, Azerbaijan will host COP29. This decision was made at the COP28 plenary meeting held in Dubai on December 11 last year. Baku will become the center of the world and will receive about 70–80,000 foreign guests.
