The official opening ceremony of the 2024 International Mingachevir Regatta was held at Ashagi Kondalanchay reservoir in Azerbaijan’s Fuzuli city, marking the liberation of the city from occupation.
The event began with the national anthem of Azerbaijan, followed by a minute’s silence in honor of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the country’s territorial integrity.
In his opening remarks, Emin Huseynov, Special Representative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Aghdam, Fuzuli, and Khojavand districts, described the organization of such major sporting events in the liberated territories as a milestone event. He also highlighted the reconstruction and restoration works carried out in Fuzuli under instructions of President Ilham Aliyev.
Farid Gayibov, Minister of Youth and Sports, stressed the importance of the regatta and wished success to the athletes.
The regatta brings together 100 athletes from Azerbaijan, Estonia, Georgia, Italy, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Türkiye, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.
The first day of the competition saw Azerbaijani rowers wining two gold, three silver and four bronze medals.
The tournament, co-organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Azerbaijan Canoe and Rowing Federation, will conclude on October 18 at the Kur Olympic Training and Sports Center in Mingachevir.
