Chovqan (a traditional horse-riding game played on a flat, grassy field by two competing teams of players mounted on Karabakh horses) competitions will be held in Azerbaijan's Shusha and Khankendi cities in 2025, the country's Equestrian Federation Vice President Bahruz Nabiyev told reporters, AzVision.az reports.
"Chovqan competitions will be held in Karabakh in the near future," he said.
According to him, discussions have already been held with the Ministry of Youth and Sports in this regard.
Alongside modern equestrian sports, the Federation pays great attention to ancient national equestrian games, the official explained.
"Through such competitions, we aim to contribute to the development of national equestrian sports," also said Nabiyev.
The vice president of the federation emphasized that participation of Azerbaijani trotters in international competitions is planned.
"We have received an invitation to a tournament in Türkiye. We have specific plans and continue to work on them," he added.
To note, Chovqan was inscribed in 2013 on the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.
