COP29: Protest held over French colonial territories

During the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Baku Initiative Group (BIG) organized a protest entitled "End Colonialism for Peace and a Green World!"

Activists from island nations affected by French colonialism, including the Guianas—one of the last South American territories under colonial rule—participated in the demonstration. Protesters voiced strong opposition to the continued colonial status of these regions and called on France to end its colonial practices. They demanded the inclusion of territories impacted by French colonialism on the UN decolonization list and emphasized the need for climate justice in these regions.

They expressed their message through peaceful demonstrations, with slogans such as "End colonialism for peace and a green world," "Justice delayed—justice denied," "Let's free education and ideas from colonialism!" and "Let's say no to colonialism!"
